We appreciate if you could take a moment to read the following care instructions before wearing your piece.
- The top part of this jewellery piece functions as a mirror. Its structure is made by applying a silver mirror coating (silver plating) to the back side of the glass, and the surface is protected with a clear coating layer. As the top part is hollow inside, please be careful to prevent water from entering the piece. Please remove the ring before bathing or washing your hands.
- Although it is made from highly durable glass, please don't drop the piece from a high place or intentionally hit it against hard surfaces, as this may cause damage or breakage. Please also take good care by not scratching the inner mirror surface.
- In rare cases, the silver layer may develop a bluish tint or partial peeling over time. We hope you will enjoy these natural changes as part of the materials' evolving expression over time.
- Please refrain from wearing the piece in environment with high temperature or humidity.
- For daily care, if the glass surface becomes dirty, please apply a commercially available glass cleaner to a soft cloth and gently wipe the surface.
SUGATA Series
In contemporary society, while the range of possible ways of living has expanded, we are at the same time compelled to continually question our own existence. This work seeks to create a moment that prompts a renewed reflection on the self. By wearing mirrored surfaces, the body incorporates one’s own image, the surrounding environment, and everything reflected within it. This reveals how the self emerges through relationships with others and its environment, while the distorted reflections suggest the ambiguity and instability of all that surrounds us. The reflected image of the self remains inherently uncertain, resisting fixed definition. This instability, along with the subtle dissonance produced by distortion, visualizes the fluidity of self-perception—disrupting the identities we unconsciously fix, and inviting a reconsideration of the self. Through these overlapping effects, the work functions as a device that allows “the self” to be experienced not as something fixed, but as something that arises through relationships with environment, others, and time.
About Haruna Sugie:
Born in 1997 in Aichi, Japan. Lives and works in Tokyo. Sugie is a glass artist whose practice explores the interrelationship between the body, emotion, and perception. She began studying lampworking at Khan Glass Works in 2019. She received her BFA in Glass from the Department of Crafts and Industrial Design at Musashino Art University in 2022, and completed her MFA in Glass at the Graduate School of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts in 2024. Working primarily with lampworking techniques using an oxygen burner, each piece is meticulously handcrafted. Her work engages with the inherent tension between fragility and strength within glass, expressing it as a metaphor for the delicate equilibrium that resides within human existence. Sugie creates both wearable works and spatial objects as extensions of the same line of inquiry. Through materials such as glass and mirrors, she examines the boundaries between self and other, and between the visible and the invisible. Through the properties of glass—transparency, reflection, and distortion—her practice further seeks to reconsider the formation and perception of the self within the evershifting conditions of contemporary society.
