To celebrate the very first and exclusive exhibition of Japanese lacquerware artist Junko Yashiro in Australia, we have invited Melbourne-based Japanese wagashi artisan Minako (Minnie) Asai to co-host a special opening event together. Minnie will be demonstrating how to create the design of Japanese wagashi Nerikiri during the event and beautifully presenting them by using Junko Yashiro's works. Each participant will have the exclusive opportunity to witness the Nerikiri making procedures alongside with Minnie's explanation, and will be able to taste a handmade Nerikiri prepared by Minnie after the demonstration. Contemporary Urushi Art That Harmonizes with Modern Living
An Urushi Artist Nurtured by the Spirit of Tokyo University of the Arts
Creating from the ground up, Junko Yashiro is a rare presence in the world of lacquerware.
In the traditional lacquerware-producing regions of Japan, creation is typically a collaborative process: kijishi craft the wooden base, while nushi apply the lacquer. It is rare for a single artist to oversee the entire process—from shaping the wooden form to the final lacquer finish. Yet Junko Yashiro does just that.
Her wide-ranging portfolio includes everything from everyday vessels to classically inspired forms and light, contemporary designs. A standout feature is her innovative take on oshiki trays and bon platters, presented in diverse styles. Her sakeware, often accented with metal handles, is particularly striking. Even uncommon lacquerware items like soy sauce dispensers showcase her fresh and thoughtful approach.
Designed to complement both Japanese and Western table settings, her works transition seamlessly between formal and casual dining. Functional yet full of charm, they are pieces that naturally invite themselves to the modern table.
About the Japanese wagashi artisan - Minako Asai (Minnie), owner and creator of MinnieSweets based in Melbourne.
Minnie grew up in the Aichi prefecture in Japan, and wagashi is a formative reminder of her childhood. After moving to Melbourne, authentic wagashi was very hard to find. She began teaching herself how to make wagashi, replying on the memories of taste and texture, and her years of experience working in a food hall of one of the largest department stores in Japan. Minnie is now on a mission to bring the authentic, handmade Japanese confectionery experience to Melbourne and Australia!
